Peter Schmid – Stories from the Studio

STA virtually visited with Peter Schmid at Hillside Pottery in the Southern Highlands and were treated to a tour of his studio.

I work out of my studio in Alpine in the Southern Highlands and have been potting since 1984. I created my studio in an old packing shed in the garden in 1990.

I mainly create production pottery such as jugs, bowls, plates, mugs, platters and one off vases. Fired either in wood or gas kilns. I also make table ware for home and commercial use using high fire glazes that are food safe and dishwasher hardy.

I use an old dough mixer to mix clay and work mainly in stoneware and terracotta.

I have several kilns including a wood fire kiln that you can see in action in the images below.

I have had an increase in requests regarding teaching and studio space hire, so much so that we are in the process of expanding the studio space to facilitate this new need.

Even though the Southern Highlands Arts trail has been cancelled for 2021, Peter will open his studio for Covid safe visits and sales during early December.
