Stories from the Studio: Kathryn Hartnett

‘Stories from the Studio this week’ – STA caught up with Kathryn Hartnett in Goulburn. Kathryn is an Australian singer-songwriter whose powerful voice and emotionally charged songwriting sit at the intersection of indie rock, pop-punk, and modern rock. Emerging from regional New South Wales, Kathryn has built a reputation as a compelling live performer, blending raw vocal intensity with melodic guitar-driven soundscapes.

Growing up in Goulburn, NSW, Kathryn was immersed in music from an early age. The only girl among four older brothers, she found her voice within a family of musicians
and picked up her first acoustic guitar at just nine years old. Performing alongside her brothers in various band line-ups, she quickly developed the stage presence and musicianship that would define her career. Kathryn first broke onto the Australian music scene with her 2011 debut EP ‘Apple of Desire’, a release that showcased her early folk and roots influences through introspective storytelling and acoustic-driven arrangements. Touring the East Coast, she connected with audiences from Melbourne to Cairns, earning attention for her distinctive vocal tone and honest lyrical style.

By 2017, Kathryn had evolved her sound with the release of her ‘Arctic Fire’ EP, leaning into a stronger, more confident rock aesthetic. Driven by catchy guitar riffs and dynamic energy, tracks like “Cloud Nine,” “Running,” and “You Can’t Have It Both Ways” marked a shift toward a bolder, full-band sound. Her music blends the grit of rock with melodic sensibility, positioning her as a versatile artist across indie and alternative spaces.

Following a period away from the stage, Kathryn has re-emerged with a renewed creative direction—fronting a four-piece band and embracing a distinctly “rock-chick” sound anchored in both vulnerability and strength. Known for her engaging live shows, she has shared stages with established Australian acts and continues to build a growing footprint on the live circuit, including support appearances for iconic bands such as The Superjesus and Dallas Frasca. Critics and audiences alike have noted the authenticity she brings to her performances—whether delivering stripped-back acoustic moments or high-energy rock sets. Her songwriting explores themes of personal growth, resilience, relationships, and self-discovery, resonating with listeners through both relatability and emotional depth.

Now entering a new chapter, Kathryn is preparing to release new material that reflects her artistic evolution—combining her roots in storytelling with a more expansive, band-driven sound (including a duet with James Van Cooper). With fresh music on the horizon and a strong presence on stage, she continues to carve out her place in the Australian music landscape as an artist defined by grit, heart, and unapologetic expression.
