Stories from the Studio: Janno Scanes & Robyn Sykes

STA recently caught up with Janno and Robyn to have a chat about the Irish & Celtic Music Festival in Yass.

Expressions of interest are now open for performers to be part of the much-loved Irish and Celtic Music Festival in Yass. Musicians, dancers, poets, spoken-word artists from across the Celtic traditions are warmly invited to apply to perform at this vibrant, community-focused event. With a reputation for welcoming both established and emerging artists, the festival offers performers the chance to share their craft with engaged audiences in a setting rich in history, culture and atmosphere.

Held in the heart of Yass, the Irish and Celtic Music Festival celebrates the town’s deep Irish and Celtic roots through a lively programme of music, dance, poetry and storytelling. Since its beginnings in 2018, the festival has grown into a highlight of the regional cultural calendar, attracting visitors and performers who value authenticity, connection and plenty of good craic. In recognition of its quality and impact, the festival was proudly awarded ‘Best Event in the Yass Valley’ in 2025.
Festival Director Janno Scanes notes that Yass has a long and meaningful connection to Irish and Celtic heritage. Early Irish free settlers, the orphan girls who arrived during the Irish potato famine of 1848–1850, the Carmelite Nuns, and modern Irish families have all shaped the town’s identity. This living history forms the backdrop to the festival and adds depth and significance to every performance.
Performers have the unique opportunity to present their work in beautiful historic venues, including the 180-year-old Lovat Chapel and the Yass Soldiers’ Memorial Hall, alongside outdoor stages and community spaces. The weekend also includes workshops, Celtic markets in Banjo Paterson Park, and a junior fleadh that celebrates young talent and supports the next generation.
Becoming part of the Irish and Celtic Music Festival means joining an award-winning, inclusive celebration of culture, heritage and community. Performers are encouraged to submit their expressions of interest and help bring Yass to life with music, movement and story.
