Stories From the Studio: Goulburn & District Art Society

For over a century, the Goulburn & District Art Society has been a vibrant gathering place for artists, an enduring hub of creativity, connection and community. Established in 1904, the Society has nurtured generations of artists, fostering both emerging talent and accomplished practitioners who have left their mark on the region’s artistic landscape. In its current form since the 1950s, it continues to thrive as a cornerstone of the local arts scene.

At its heart, the Society is driven by a shared passion, to celebrate and cultivate art in Goulburn and the surrounding areas. Through regular painting days, workshops and exhibitions, members are supported in their creative pursuits, inspired by one another, and encouraged to grow. Just as importantly, the Society brings art out into the community, inviting the public to experience, appreciate and connect with the work of local artists.

A highlight of the artistic calendar is the prestigious Goulburn Workers Club Art Prize, held each October. This open exhibition, known for its generous prize pool, attracts artists from far beyond the region, including the ACT, Sydney, the Southern Highlands and Tablelands, the Central and South Coasts, as well as interstate entrants from Victoria and Queensland. It is a celebration not only of individual excellence but of the wider artistic community.
The Society’s work is made possible through the generous support of the Goulburn Workers Club, Goulburn Mulwaree Council, and many local businesses and individuals.
Since 2019, the Society has called a spacious studio in the former storage depot at the corner of Bourke and Combermere Streets its home. Here, creativity flourishes. Members gather for painting sessions, meetings and workshops, transforming the space into a lively centre of artistic exchange.

Seasons of Life Exhibition – Friday 19 June – 31 July
“Seasons of Life” presents a rich and diverse collection of works by members of the Goulburn & District Art Society. Featuring 13 artists and 34 artworks across a variety of mediums, the exhibition offers something to engage and inspire every visitor.
Throughout the exhibition, visitors are warmly invited to attend “Meet the Artists” Morning Tea at 10am every Friday. Share a cuppa, enjoy a biscuit, and connect with the artists behind the works, no bookings needed, and all are welcome.
