Stories from the Studio: Braidwood Museum

STA recently went on a visit to Braidwood Museum just in time for their “Open Day” on Saturday 2nd May 2026.

Step inside one of Braidwood’s earliest surviving buildings – a place that has served many roles in the life of Braidwood. Built in the 1840s from local granite and a shingle roof, this was originally the Royal Hotel – Braidwood’s first significant hotel.

In 1870, the the building was purchased by the Grand United Order of Oddfellows, who transformed it into a place for local celebrations and added – a brick hall on the lower floor, connecting the original kitchen to the main building – a second hall above, where concerts, dances and social gatherings were held. After many years of standing empty and later converted into flats, the building was purchased by the Historical Society in 1970. Today, it’s more than a building. It’s a living archive of Braidwood’s past – home to photographs, artifacts, documents and stories that celebrate the people and events that shaped our district and bring Braidwood’s history to life.

We’re delighted to announce that the Braidwood Museum has reopened its doors. After months of building works for our new entry and accommodation we are ready to welcome you back. Whether you’re a long-time supporter or visiting for the first time, we invite you to reconnect with Braidwood’s rich heritage. Bring your family, friends, and curiosity—there’s something here for everyone.
