Empowering Young Storytellers in the ‘Hilltops Region’ with a fantastic filmmaking workshop.

Southern Tablelands Arts (STA) hosted a Filmmaking Workshop in the ‘Hilltops’ and it was all ‘Lights – Camera – Action’ for the local young participants.

Southern Tablelands Arts in conjunction with Hilltops Council and ‘Hilltops Youth Action Group’ proudly hosted a dynamic, hands-on filmmaking workshop for young creatives in the Hilltops LGA. Guided by industry professional and STA Projects & Communications Officer Kev Greaves, the workshop brought together new comers and emerging talent from across the region for an inspiring day of learning, collaboration, and storytelling.

Participants gained practical experience with professional cameras and made full use of the five STA dedicated edit suites at the Southern Cross Cinema in Young, NSW. The group gained a basic understanding of the complete video production and filmmaking process, from rough storyboarding and filming to editing and post-production basics. The workshop encouraged creative thinking while delivering real-world basic technical skills, all in a creative fun environment.

Highlights included:
Camera Operations: Participants handled professional cameras and tripods learning basic shot composition, focus pulling, filming a real life sequence for editing.
Editing: Small-group sessions on the 5 edit suites taught basic cutting, shot selection, colour grading, visual effects and sound design.

This workshop built confidence, teamwork, and communication skills among local youth, while giving an insight into the opportunities for creatives in the Film and TV Industry. By providing access to professional-grade equipment and expert guidance, Southern Tablelands Arts ensured participants left with a basic knowledge of how engaging videos can be produced using everything from their own smartphones and laptops to higher end cinema cameras and edit suites.

Southern Tablelands Arts believe programs like this are vital to fostering a vibrant, creative community, and are committed to working with local councils and partners to expand these opportunities, empowering the next generation of filmmakers and supporting the region’s cultural development.
