Stories from the Studio: Jenny Johnson

This week at Stories from the Studio, we talk to Jenny Johnson, a proud Wiradjuri woman and talented self-taught artist living and working in Yass Valley. Jenny’s artworks blend traditional and contemporary Indigenous styles, drawing inspiration from the landscapes, flora, and cultural heritage of her Wiradjuri roots. Using vibrant colors and intricate dotting techniques, her creations feature symbols like meeting places, waterholes, and rivers, which hold deep significance as sources of life and connection. Jenny paints primarily with acrylics on canvas but has expanded her practice to include hand-painted Christmas baubles and wearable art, such as scarves and ties featuring her original designs.

The Meeting Place, the artwork is currently STA’s 2024 seasonal greeting commission. This vibrant piece represents the meeting place at its center, with surrounding symbols of water and family bonds that reflect continuous journeys through life. The Meeting Place is currently on display at the Yass Valley Information Centre!
