STA Top Spots: Right to Work Mural Project

This project helped enhance the wellbeing and inclusion of a group of young adults with intellectual disability through creative expression, skill development and contribution to community.

Participants created a painted and living artwork at the entrance to Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s Workspace – a co-working space located in the Goulburn CBD which hosts a number of local businesses and organisations. The artwork will promote growth, wellness, connection and hope.

The project will took place over covid shut downs and many face to face workshops with local artist and educator, Barbara Nell.

The workshops covered:
• Development of the design concept through discussion, drawing and painting (4 x 2 hour workshops)
• Design, preparation and planting of garden beds (4 x 2 hour workshops)
• Application of the painted design to two large canvas banners (2 x 2 hours workshops).

The project helped build participants’ skills in three areas:
• Employability skills including creative thinking, communication, planning and organising, team work, initiative and problem solving
• Art skills including designing, painting and drawing
• Gardening skills including digging, potting and planting, mulching, watering, fertilising and weeding.

The project involved up to 7 young people who will attend the workshops in small groups of 4-6 people so as to abide by health guidelines for social distancing.

In addition to the STA Micro Grant  the project received in-kind support from Goulburn Mulwaree Council who  provided a venue for workshops and space for the final artwork to be displayed.

Right to Work will provide Learning Support Workers who will support Program Learners to participate in the art workshops. Any additional hours required for garden bed preparation will also be provided by Right to Work.

At the conclusion of the project, the living artwork will continue to be maintained by young adults enrolled in the Right to Work program who wish to develop their gardening and employability skills with a view to employment.
