Stories from the Studio: Myrka Robichaud
This week STA caught up with Myrka, originally from Québec, Canada, Myrka has spent over a decade immersed in the wide-open landscapes of rural Australia, calling the farming town of Harden, in the Hilltops, home. Although her professional path is in engineering and drafting, it is in art that Myrka has discovered an avenue for emotional expression and creative freedom. Alongside raising two children and building a residential drafting business, she continues to develop her identity as an artist with growing confidence and ambition.
Her paintings are driven by a love of vibrant colour palettes and the way familiar Australian scenes are transformed into something dreamlike and energetic, reimaging them with bold colours that bring energy and emotion to familiar scenes. Myrka gravitates toward landscapes, yet rarely depicts them literally. Instead, she reimagines them through bold, expressive hues that channel feeling rather than accuracy. Colour becomes a language; emotion becomes geography.
Texture plays an equally important role in her work. Acrylics form the foundation of most pieces, but she frequently incorporates gouache, ink, and plaster to build layers, structure, and tactile contrast. This experimentation gives her paintings a sense of movement—almost as if the landscape continues to shift under the viewer’s gaze.
Much of her inspiration arrives unexpectedly: during long drives through the countryside, accompanied by music that stirs memory and emotion. These moments turn into sketches, then compositions, then fully realised works that capture the essence of place rather than its literal appearance. Her art reflects a life lived between two continents, two languages, and multiple passions—combining logic and creativity, responsibility and imagination. Through colour, shape, and texture, Myrka creates artwork not just to be seen, but to be felt. “For me, art is an escape and allows me to stay still and reconnect”.
