Stories from the Studio: Michael Simic aka Mikelangelo
It’s always a fabulous experience to hang out with acclaimed local musical legend Michael Simic (aka Michelangelo). It was even more the case recently when STA met with Michael at Connect@Gunning Station ahead of the big party event on Sunday 2 November. Michael is one of the stars of a non-stop entertainment program across the day.
In true legendary style Michael has more than one exciting project on the boil as we discovered. We recommend following Michael over socials to get all the updates on concert and upcoming performances of his new show In the Belly of the Whale.
In the Belly of the Whale a rollicking and revealing tale of Michael’s journey as a new dad juggling home life with life on the road that intertwines with the mythic ocean adventures of his charming alter ego, Mikelangelo. Shipwrecked and swallowed by a giant sperm whale, the two meet in its belly and must find a way to escape.
Combining songs, storytelling, comedy, and physical theatre, In the Belly of the Whale is vibrant, tender and incredibly entertaining. This deeply personal work shines a light on what it means to be a father, a son, a husband, and an artist.
Catch Michael in action at the Connect@Gunning Station epic party day 10am-3pm Sunday 2 November. Michael is scedualed for a lunchtime power set.
About Michael Simic
Michael Simic has been a professional singer, songwriter, musician, performer, and mentor for 30 years. He has released 17 independent albums, touring widely nationally and internationally as a solo artist and with his long term group Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen.
Michael lives in Braidwood with his family. Storytelling, music and collaboration has always been at the centre of his multifarious projects.
I was born in Canberra and lived in Belconnen until I left to study Creative Arts at Wollongong University when I turned 18. I grew up in a house where the arts were actively encouraged, especially by my mother, who instilled in me and my siblings the fundamental nature of creativity and self-expression.
Throughout my artistic life and career, I’ve always been involved with an exploration of masculinity. From the absurdist performance art burlesque pop/rock group P.Harness that I formed with Geoff Hinchcliffe as a young man, to my long term mythological musical and theatrical ensemble Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen which began in 2000 and continues to this day. Through my work, I’m on an ongoing journey of mapping my internal world to make sense of the world around me.
