Baggage Handling: Humans arriving and departing with baggage.
By Lia Kemmis – Ladies Gallery
10am – 3pm every Friday 18 July – 5 September

Work from Gunning artist Lia Kemmis explores grief, utilising the metaphor of (emotional) baggage. Displayed within Connect@Gunning Station a space with poetic connections to passing through, passing on & passing away.

This exhibition contains the journey of four symbolic items of baggage: a school case, a backpack, a handbag, and a wheelie suitcase. Each represents a chapter of Lia’s own lived experience.

“We are all born into circumstances that carry their own kind of baggage. And when we leave this world, we leave baggage behind — both emotional and material. Some of it ends up in op shops; some is quietly stored in the hearts of those we’ve touched.”

These paintings don’t reveal the contents of the baggage itself. Instead, they focus on the spaces these objects inhabit — environments that hint at their histories, and the paths ahead.
