Stories from the Studio: Keva Abotomey

STA couldn’t help but dance as we got a back stage pass to visit Keva Abotomey at the dress rehearsal of Saviours of Soul – The Commitments Show at Hume Conservatorium this week.

Keva is one of thirteen local musicians who will be on stage blasting out the soulful hits in a one night only performance at Bowral Memorial Hall on Friday 25th July. This is a rare chance to relive classic Soul and Rock n Roll hits from the 50s and 60s, including Mustang Sally, Chain of Fools, Take me to the River, Treat her Right and In the Midnight Hour and more.  This must see show is complete with horn section, female backing trio (yep that’s Keva in the middle) and a powerhouse front man.

On Stage will be: Keva and front man Garth Prentice, Ebrentia Brits, Corbey-lea Will, Mike Baker, Andy Picker, Jasper Shields, Ron McLaughlin, Phil Morris, Tammy Asslett Eden Robinson, Ernie, Julian Paviour. With special guests Midnight Mojo!!

And as if the big live sound wasn’t enough the gig is a fundraiser for Hume Conservatorium of Music, an organisation that Keva and many of the other performing musicians are connected too. Hume Conservatorium provides affordable music education in the Southern Highlands and Tablelands.

Keva lives in Southern Highlands and revels in the power of music to bring people and communities together. An honours graduate from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Keva is an accomplished pianist and singer who has been involved in the teaching of music at levels from pre-school to adult both in Australia and England. She is a music educator with over a decade of experience teaching music in both classroom and community contexts, working with musicians of all ages and abilities.

In January 2025 Keva became the Music Director of Serendipity: the choir in Bundanoon. The choir has enjoyment as its prime reason for existence and is a much loved place for people to sing together.

Keva’s beautiful voice and her ability to sing works from many genres means that she is a sought after guest artist both locally and further afield.
