Enjoy the Journey
Work by Kate Tribe – Parcel Room Gallery
10am – 3pm every Friday and Saturday 18 July – 5 September
Enjoy the Journey’ celebrates life’s motion. Inviting you to savour travel, conversations, activity and quiet moments of reflection and creativity. We need a balance. Hand embroidered cross-stitch artworks, crafted during train journeys, intertwine vivid visual narratives with written stories born of chance dialogues and situations. The artworks break free from pre-designed patterns, embracing the raw spontaneity of freehand stitching within a cross stitch technique. A section shares the journey from pattern to free design through a timeless star. Showing you how to develop your creative narrative, instilling a deep passion for exploration, innovation, and transformation.

What happened there, 2022
Cotton. Cross stitch on Aida cloth.
27.5cm x 27.5cm
$715
Statement: A representation of a strange time. Hand-dyed variant threads but not commuter life; home life and movement with a smaller space. However, there was calmness in the extra time and sense of community.
Part of the ‘Transitions’ series
Also available as A3 limited edition print: $150

Fold and pull, 2020
Cotton. Cross stitch on Aida cloth.
45.8 cm x 33.7cm
$715
Statement: During the bushfire and covid, we were pulled and turned. We sometimes felt like we were doing U turns. Through it though, was a bright energy of community coming together.
Part of the ‘Being pulled and folded’ series.
Also available as A3 limited edition print: $150

Deconstructed Roses, 2024
Cotton. Cross stitch on Aida cloth.
45.8cm x 33.7cm
$715
Statement: The materials for this work were gifted to me in the form of a kit with a pattern for roses. I had these roses in mind as I stitched while experimenting with the approaches of both Being pulled and folded and Commuter Life series of works.
Part of the ‘Transitions’ series
Also available as A3 limited edition print: $150

New Horizon, 2019
Cotton. Cross stitch on Aida cloth.
45.8cm x 33.7cm
$715
Statement: Sometimes we start something, and inspiration fritters away. It needs more experience or a different perspective to finish. This is about those new horizons that don’t come straight away.

Border, 2022
Cross stitch on Aida cloth.
33.5cm x 24.7cm
$455
Statement: A simple earthy border of pattern within pattern. I was thinking about interior design and patterns on walls. A tile motif or edging on a wall. How they are immovable art but integral to appreciation of spaces.
Part of the ‘Transitions’ series

Commuter life isn’t so simple 2019
Cotton. Cross stitch on Aida cloth.
33.5cm x 24.7cm
$585
Statement: Once you’ve adjusted to a new life, it goes from a lovely new rhythm and pattern to seemingly overly complex as your old life hangs on. So you feel like you’re living two lives – maintaining the past and building the future.
Part of the ‘Commuter Life’ series.
Also available as A4 limited edition print: $80

Inverse, 2023
Cotton. Cross stitch on Aida cloth.
33.5cm x 24.7
$585
Statement: There are arrows pointing to the centre and lines to follow in loops, others that just fill space. It small but full of paths for eyes to wander and give your brain space to consider a problem needing to be solved.
Part of the ‘Commuter Life’ series.

Mini works, 2024 onwards
Cotton. Cross stitch on Aida cloth
NFS
Statement: These works started as a 100 day project and I now take it on long train journeys. The creative restriction is that each work needs to be stitched within a small flexi-hoop and with thread left over from other projects and combined in a pile.
This is the ‘Mini works’ series.

Uniforms for travel 2025
Cotton. Cross stitch on Aida cloth.
$585
Statement: First in series, combining printed photos and cross stitch. This asks about the uniforms we wear. What they say about us, or what we want you to believe about us. Many men wearing blue suits with me placed in the foreground.
Part of the ‘Enjoy the Journey’ series.

Cerulean Labyrinth 2024
Cotton. Cross stitch on Aida cloth.
$585
Statement: Stitched in variant wool and cotton ply on 6-count Aida cloth. While inspired by computing, the size meant it was more practical to stitch at home. No stained glass involved in the design, but you’re not alone if you make that connection.
Part of the ‘Commuter Life’ series.

Orange square, 2025
Cotton. Cross stitch on Aida cloth.
$455
Statement: The simplicity of the shades of one colour. This time selects for its combination of warmth and energy. The ‘being pulled’ theme in larger shapes pulls us in and pushes us away.
Part of the ‘Being pulled and folded’ series

Monochrome stars, 2012
Cotton. Cross stitch on Aida cloth.
$325
Statement: A favourite feature of a restaurant set menu is a break from decision making. Stitching stars is like that. Pick the colour, like a restaurant, and enjoy the almost automatic process that follows.
Part of the ‘Moody Stars’ series
