Djon Mundine OAM: Stories from the Studio
The STA Region boasts several nationally established creatives, and we are truly fortunate to include Bandjalung man, Djon Mundine OAM as a local. Through his work as an Aboriginal curator, writer, artist and activist, Djon has helped the development, exhibition and understanding of contemporary Aboriginal art across the globe. For the first time many of his most influential essays have been brought together in a new publication; Windows and Mirrors.
STA had the honour of meeting up with Djon this week at his home in the Southern Highlands to talk about the book and the extraordinary body of work it includes. We were even lucky enough to hear about his time in Ramingining in Central Arnhem Land and the creation of the Aboriginal Memorial, one of the most significant works of art ever created in Australia.
If you have an interest in Aboriginal Art Windows and Mirrors is a must read.
Djon Mundine OAM is a proud Bandjalung man from the Northern Rivers of New South Wales who lives in the Southern Highlands.

“Always Was, Always Will Be Aboriginal Land” is an important statement as it reasserts that the very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples, and that their sovereignty of this Country has never been ceded. It is a clear declaration that First Nations people are still here and are never leaving. A statement of resilience, survival, deep connection and celebration.
