Securing Australia’s Place as a Cultural Powerhouse

Being a cultural powerhouse is within our grasp, but it is up to all of us

Rose and the STA Board Secretary Louise Wakefield recently attended a talk from Rupert Myer AO, Chair of A New Approach, on the theme Becoming a Cultural Powerhouse at the National Press Club in Canberra.

Mr Myer outlined a roadmap for Australia securing Australia’s place as a cultural powerhouse. In asserting that Australia has a maturing cultural confidence in which all can share and benefit from, Rupert called on government, the creative industries, business, philanthropy and media to act with urgency to secure a better future for all Australians.

Australia can be a place where arts, culture and creativity thrive in its fullest expression. We can have a pro-culture legislative, regulatory and leadership environment fostering a cultural sector that is able to invest in its own success … we can be home to a $270 billion industry that employs almost 1 million people. We can celebrate arts, culture and creativity as part of what it means to be Australian both here and abroad. There is no other country like ours on earth and yet we are connected to every other country on earth.

Rupert Myer is the Chair of A New Approach (ANA). ANA is Australia’s leading arts and culture think tank. ANA brings together independent research and analysis showing that Australians from every walk of life participate in and benefit from arts, culture and creativity.
