Stories from the Studio: Andrew May
This week we caught up with multi-disciplinary artist Andrew May! Andrew practices across the fields of Photography, Painting, Sculpture and Works on Papers and has exhibited artworks in numerous local and international awards and exhibitions over the last 20 years, with works being held in collections in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific region.
“The idea can in its infancy begin as a drawing and end upon completion birthing a sculptural work purely to be determined by either financial or physical gains. I consider my role chiefly in this lifespan to remain a documentor of and towards a society as it grinds past my existence, with minimal interaction with maximum emotional drainage to fuel my creativity in its quest to reap its rewards before the last curtain call.”
Andrew recently won the Sculpture Award in the Earth Hour Sculpture in the Gardens, 2023. You can still visit the work at Southern Higlands Botanical Gardens in Bowral. Andrew’s sculptures are also on display at the Sculptures for Clyde in Batemans Bay from May 27 to June 4. Andrew has also been commissioned by the Kargaroo Island Sculpture Trail to produce seven new works that Andrew will install in South Australia later this year.
