The Shearing Shed 2025
Mixed Media 35cm x 45cm
$240 enquire about this work

The Shearing Shed Although I have family connections to the Hilltops; I only moved here permanently a bit over a year ago. So, I’m still discovering – inhaling! – my surroundings. When the Young Society of Artists set a challenge to create works based in the landscape, I decided to piece together an image using elements from within that landscape: prints and rubbings of leaves from the trees on our block. The hills and sky are based on the view from our front windows; the beautiful shearing shed is inspired by one on a friend’s property.

The Speckled Bowl Cherries 2025
 Acrylic 32cm x 42cm
 $140 enquire about this work

 Cherries The Hilltops region is famous for its fruit growing, and we’re lucky enough to have orchardist friends who share their bounty with us: loquats, apricots, figs, nectarines, and more. The most celebrated of local crops is the cherry. In fact, Young is known as the Cherry Capital! This bunch went into a batch of jam (delicious). I was inspired by artists I met locally and online to try painting with watercolour on prepared canvas, instead of the usual paper.

I love the Australian landscape, rural life and its people. These are my most common subjects. I have always been drawn to the wonder and beauty of nature, in all forms.I love to draw with pencil, as the simplicity of a line can say so much, however I like to think I have no preferred medium. I tend to use the medium which I feel best depicts the subject and mood of my painting or drawing.  I enjoy living & painting the surrounding countryside in the Hilltops. There is an endless supply of inspiration with the changing seasons.

Kirsten Griffiths {Young}
Booroolong Frog 2025
À la poupée drypoint etching 25cm x 30cm
$190 enquire about this work

This medium-sized, stream-dwelling frog was once common across eastern Australia but is now listed as endangered. They grow to about 5cm, and may be grey, brown, or olive green, with mottled markings and a white belly. Their eyes are golden with a horizontal pupil, and they have a quiet, purring call. Threats: Booroolong Frogs require a permanent flow of water. Human activity (e.g. dams, quarrying, agriculture, and introduced trees such as willow) has had a significant impact on their habitat. They are also under threat from disease and predation by introduced fish. Perunga Grasshopper (Cross-dressing Grasshopper)

Booroolong Frog 2025
À la poupée drypoint etching 25cm x 30cm
$190 enquire about this work

I’m originally from Aotearoa New Zealand, but I have been living in Young since 2022. One of my favourite aspects of life here is discovering more about Australian flora and fauna. I have been drawing, painting, and printmaking for several years. I love drawing and am embarking on a two-year fulltime intensive drawing training program (through New Masters Academy). These etchings were made at the print studio in the Boorowa Museum.

Kirsten Griffiths {Young}
Perunga Grasshopper 2025
À la poupée drypoint etching 10cm x 15cm
$190  enquire about this work

This small flightless grasshopper lives in native grass tussocks and is only found in a small range around the ACT and parts of NSW (including records from Boorowa). Females are about 3cm long, and males about half that size. Although tiny, their markings and armour plating are striking, and they can jump about a metre if disturbed. They are sometimes known as the Cross-dressing Grasshopper, because they vary in colour from brown to bright green depending on how wet the season is (and thus the colour of the grass), they have a pale cross marking on their backs, and they have distinctive blue feet that look like they are wearing high-heeled shoes. Threats: Habitat loss, degradation of native grassland, invasive weeds, and wildfires.

50 x 50 cm
$550 enquire about this work

These drypoint etchings are hand coloured with gouache and feature images of Vulnerable birds (as listed by the NSW department of Environment and Planning) of the Hilltops and surrounding regions. These artworks were inspired by my increasing awareness of the plight of local birds.  When drawing, etching and painting a bird I like to focus on its character, not just its physical features and animate it with flick of paint on an eyebrow or a glint in the eye.
