Stories from the Studio: Peter Minson
This week STA catches up with Peter & Lindsay from the Glass Teapot Cafe & Peter Minson Art Glass in Binalong. As a third-generation glassblower, Peter carries forward a family tradition that seamlessly blends science, craftsmanship, and creativity. Beginning in the world of scientific glassblowing, where precision and functionality were paramount, his career evolved into the pursuit of glass as an expressive art form. Over the years, Peter has worked alongside some of the most accomplished glass artists in the field, sharing knowledge and mastery as an equal.
Glass has long held a magnetic allure, brilliant, solid, and sharp when cold, yet fluid, luminous, and alive when molten. The transformation of raw material into a glowing work of art under intense heat remains endlessly fascinating. The ability to imagine a form or colour and watch it emerge, almost magically, from fire and motion is at the heart of Peter’s lifelong passion.
Peter and Lindsay operate the Glass Teapot Café & studio, located in the quiet village of Binalong, about 95 kilometres northwest of Canberra, this serves as both a workspace and a place of teaching. Here, visitors are invited to experience the same enchantment of glassblowing that fuels every creation. With over sixty years of experience, Peter’s career began in the family business producing scientific glassware, including intricate and calibrated instruments. Seeking greater creative freedom, he later built his own furnaces and developed new techniques for artistic glassmaking. Studies at Sweden’s prestigious Orrefors Glass School and Kosta Boda Glassworks further refined his skills before returning to Australia to continue this practice in South Australia. For the past three decades, their Binalong studio has focused primarily on lampworking — a process using a torch flame to shape and colour glass. After three years at the Canberra School of Art, Peter was invited to return to establish and teach lampworking courses. Peter went on to found the Lampworking Department at RMIT University in Melbourne and assisted in creating the department at Sydney College of the Arts, co-teaching a course preceding the 1997 Ausglass Conference.
Through his mentorship and artistry, Peter’s glassblowing continues to inspire others to experience the same wonder and satisfaction found in the transformative world of glass.
