Stories from the Studio: Yass Valley History Centre
Recently STA had the pleasure of visiting Yass Valley History Centre. We were treated to a tour of the amazing Hume exhibition and the interesting collection objects on display. We were also shown around the extensive archive area which holds a rich collection of historical documents.
Dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of Yass Valley since 1961. The Yass Valley History Centre houses a unique archival collection and offers a personalised research service powered by passionate volunteers
The main exhibition on display “Hamilton Hume: Going Places” features the incredible life of Hamilton Hume.
There is also the Gallery of curious things where objects from the collection are displayed including an installation of drawing depicting Comur Street in the 1890’s. Quite a contrast to twenty-first century Yass and well worth a visit.
Since its formation in 1961, the Society has been actively collecting objects of historical interest related to Yass and the district. The museum was officially opened in its present location in December 1988 after extensive refurbishments were made to a former garage over five years.
The museum is conveniently located just two doors from the Yass Valley Information Centre and adjoining Coronation Park with its playground and toilet facilities.

This cup and saucer capture one of the biggest scandals in British royal history. Originally produced by Delphine Pottery for Edward VIII’s coronation on May 12, 1937, plans changed when he abdicated to marry twice divorced American socialite, Wallis Simpson.
Rather than waste valuable stock, a simple yet blunt update was added: “Abdicated December 11th, 1936.” Meanwhile, his younger brother Albert -soon to be George VI -was squeezed onto the reverse side of the cup and crammed onto the saucer rim. A fascinating piece of royal history, now on display at the Yass Valley History Centre.
Comur Street 1890’s.
A popular model streetscape that shows how the main street of Yass looked well before the days of motor vehicles, street and traffic lights, paved footpaths, and trees.
Intricately original drawing recreated from early photographs and description of buildings in use during the 1890s. Many are still in use today.
