Community Steams Ahead for Gunning Station’s 150th Anniversary Celebration

Sunshine, song, and community spirit filled the Gunning Railway Station on Sunday 2 November, as hundreds gathered to celebrate 150 years since the station’s opening and the second birthday of Connect@Gunning Station.

Under a glorious blue sky, the festival atmosphere was vibrant — with locals and visitors enjoying a full day of music, food, art, and heritage in the heart of Gunning.

The music line-up was a highlight, featuring stellar performances from Michael Simic, Joel Bulger, Jerikye Williams, Eduardo Ruiz, and Henry Lawson (portrayed by Max Cullen), whose energy and storytelling captivated the crowd.

A huge thank you to the students at Gunning Public School who brought the fun with a surprise flash mob dance created with Elise Hockam from Upper Lachlan Performing Arts.

The Gunning & District Historical Society’s exhibition and Robert Popovski’s model railway display were major drawcards, with visitors reminiscing and sharing stories about the station’s remarkable history.

The Southern Tablelands Arts (STA) team hosted free art activities for children, sparking creativity and laughter throughout the day, while the Connect Markets offered a colourful mix of handmade crafts, local produce, and vintage finds.

Food trucks served up delicious meals and cool treats, while families relaxed in the shade, enjoying the festive spirit.

‘The Gunning Station 150 celebration is a wonderful example how creativity, history, and old fashion entertainment will bring a community together,’ said Rose Marin Southern Tablelands Arts Executive Director, ‘It was heartwarming to see families, artists, and rail enthusiasts sharing stories and making memories in this special place.’

The celebration was made possible through the partnership of Southern Tablelands Arts, Transport for NSW, Transport Asset Manager (TAM) of NSW and the local community.

As the event drew to a close, the resounding message was clear — Gunning Station remains a proud symbol of connection, creativity, and community.

Connect@GunningStation is open 10am-3pm every Friday (closed on public holidays. With extra summer opening hours every second Saturday. Check out what’s on at Connect before your visit.
