Major Public art opportunity plus lanterns, dancing and painting!

In 2019 the Appin community will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the mine disaster that killed 14 miners, leaving a heavy toll on the community.

In recognition of the anniversary, South32 is seeking expressions of interest from artists to create a major public artwork for permanent installation at the Appin Sportsground, 40 Sportsground Parade, Appin. The commission seeks applications of an original public artwork by an Australian artist or artist collective, with the successful applicant/s being granted $100,000 to create their work.

Proposals must be received by Sunday, May 5. The successful artist will be notified by Friday, May 17.

  • This is a commission for a new and original work. Existing artworks and/or concepts will not be accepted as part of any application.
  • Submissions will only be accepted by Australian artists or Australian residents (however, in the case of a consortia of artists, not all artists must identify as Australian, but there must be at least one representative).
  • The public artwork is intended to be a memorial.

The expression of interest submission asks for the artist’s initial thinking and creative strategy, but not for a full concept. Download the full brief here.

We have received some lovely feedback about the first stream:

“The program has cemented a deep desire for me to continue getting out doors and finding inspiration for writing, and I would not hesitate to attend the program again if it were offered in the future”.

“These Courses are a valuable way of bringing people together, making new friends, improving not only Fitness but Mental Health. I hope that they will continue for the benefit of the Community.”

“I suffer from depression and anxiety and it was fantastic to hear both Tess and Sarah talking about ways to maintain mental health as well as physical health. As well as this, the participants and instructors were all so open, welcoming and accommodating – only do what you can was a motto for the fitness aspect.”
