Stories From the Studio: Anthony Lewis
The Mulwaree Amateur Dramatics Theatre Company, proudly presents ‘Vox Populi’, a bold and thought-provoking new work brought to life under the direction of Anthony “Ant” Lewis.
Dystopias don’t just happen overnight. Under Ant Lewis’s direction, Vox Populi carefully unpacks the gradual steps, the quiet erosion of freedoms and the subtle shifts in power that allow societies to drift towards darker futures. Written by Chris Gordon, this political fable is shaped and sharpened by Lewis’s vision into a confronting, contemporary theatre experience that resonates strongly with today’s audiences. Set during the final week of a heated election campaign, the production explores the clash between progressive and conservative forces, and how quickly division can escalate. Ant Lewis steers the narrative beyond simple political binaries, drawing out the human cost of polarisation, the role of media influence, and the dangers of silencing dissenting voices. Through his direction, the play becomes not just a story, but a powerful reflection on how the “voice of the people” can be lost piece by piece.
Known for his commitment to compelling, actor-driven storytelling, Ant brings intensity and clarity to this debut production at the Goulburn Performing Arts Centre. His direction emphasises both sides of the political spectrum, avoiding easy answers while encouraging audiences to think critically and engage deeply with the issues presented. Vox Populi is contemporary, confrontational and thought-provoking. It contains strong language and depictions of violence, under Ant Lewis’s direction it is guaranteed to spark conversation long after the curtain falls.
Early readers have praised the script’s impact:
“…a razor-sharp political thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat… every act has a new twist,” Brenda Proudman, CADS.
“Vox Populi is the most confronting political play I’ve ever read – powerful, thought-provoking and timely,” Councillor Liz McKeon.
“…a masterful exploration of current politics and abuse of power… sure to leave audiences stunned and questioning,” Sarah Trama.
This production is a significant achievement for the local arts community entirely written, directed, and produced in Goulburn. With Ant Lewis at the helm, it highlights the strength of local creative talent and offers performers the chance to engage with a challenging and dynamic new work.
