Ever wanted to turn your creative dream into a business reality? Are you already freelancing and want to know if you’re doing things properly? Are you an arts business and ready to move past “making it up as you go along”?
This fast, fun and information-packed workshop uncovers the ten worst ‘pain points’ on the road to a successful creative business, and gives practical guidance on how to manoeuvre past the pain and continue towards success.
- Setting goals and planning your business journey;
- Understanding and handling money matters;
- The key to managing time better;
- Introduction to creative tax and legal resources;
- Marketing tips and juggling the realities of combining art and business.
These Top Ten Tips are tailored specifically to creative people who are (or want to be) self-employed, and the tips are relevant no matter what your profession – filmmakers, writers, musicians, designers, visual artists, performers – all can benefit from a quick introduction or refresher to the basics of creative business.

All NSW participants are entitled to 4 x 1 hour CHAT sessions, with a creative industries business advisor, 100% subsidised by Business Connect and therefore at no cost to you (no, there’s no catch!).
Who should enrol?
This workshop is ideal for recent graduates, freelancers and anyone struggling with the business aspects of their creativity. It’s also relevant no matter what your profession – filmmakers, writers, designers, visual artists, musicians, composers, dancers, performers – everyone can benefit from a quick introduction or refresher to the basics of business.
Who is Presenting?
Business advisor and creative industries expert Monica Davidson from the Creative Plus Business Group. Monica is a writer and filmmaker by trade who learned how to run a successful creative business and now shares that knowledge with others. In her workshops Monica discusses her own experiences, and shares examples from the 600-plus people she has mentored through the process of starting and building their creative businesses.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?
This event is open to all ages – but be warned, Monica is a fan of ‘colourful’ language!
Do you offer concessions?
No. Our prices are set due to our relationship with NSW Department of Industry and Business Connect – remember, for that price you also get 4 hours of additional business advice! However, feel free to get in touch if you’re very strapped for cash and we’ll see what we can do.
Is my registration/ticket transferrable?
You can give your ticket to someone else to use, but there will be no refunds if you can’t attend. Let us know in advance if you can’t attend and we’ll try and pop you in another workshop. There is a refund policy up to 1 day before the workshop commences.
Will I be fed?
All our 3 hour workshops include a short break, and we will serve a basic snack of tea, coffee and bikkies. Quality will be variable depending on location but we always do our best! Bring your own water bottle, just in case.
